On the morning of the Oct 23, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the official opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge during the opening ceremony in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is the first large-scale cross-sea traffic project jointly undertaken by Guangdong Province, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Macao Special Administrative Region, with a number of large state-owned enterprises playing a leading role in the construction. Among them, China Resources Cement (CR Cement) designed high-performance marine cement to meet the specific requirements of the project.

The construction of the 55-km Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge took nine years. Connecting Hong Kong on the east with Zhuhai of Guangdong Province and Macao on the west, the sea-spanning bridge is designed to have a service life for 120 years. The bridge is located at the intersection of the Pearl River Delta and the Pearl River basin, a sea area with extremely complicated natural conditions such as ocean currents, navigation channels, seabed and climate, which requires heavy anti-corrosion measures. Therefore, stricter demands were placed on the durability of the basic reinforced concrete structure.

In 2011, China Resources Cement began to supply cement products for the mainland section of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge project, including the main bridge, the prefabrication of the island tunnel immersed pipe and other major projects. The actual supply of cement amounted to about 1.3 million tons, accounting for 86.7% of the total cement used in the mainland section of the bridge.

Among the supply was the high-performance Portland cement under the brand of “Runfeng” with the grade of P. II 42.5(R), P.O 42.5(R), P.II 52.5(R). The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge consists of the mainland section and the Hong Kong section. According to authoritative statistics from the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Authority, an approximate total of 1.5 million tons of cement were used for the mainland section, and the figure for the Hong Kong Link Road stood at around 480,000 tons, bringing the aggregate cement consumption to 1.98 million tons for the entire project.
